Talking About Tomorrow
James 4:13-17

We all have a tendency to live in Tomorrow Land. We will get in better shape tomorrow. We will go visit a friend tomorrow. We will do an act of kindness tomorrow. We will reach our goals tomorrow. This is our final Sunday of our June series on royal families. If you have been following along, I hope that you have picked up that the writers of Kings and Chronicles are not writing history as we think of it today. They were writing about faith. The three scriptures above tell about three people who became king at an average age of 9. For good reason, our nation has set a minimum age requirement of 35 for President. Joash began well, but finished poorly. Manasseh reigned longer than any other king (55 years), and for most of his life was considered one of Isarel’s most evil kings, yet at the end of his life turned to God. His grandson, Josiah (who began his rule at 8 years old) was considered one of the most righteous throughout his life. If someone was to write the history of your faith, what would they write?

Missionary Partners, Victor Vaca and Blanca Puma here this Sunday!! Oregon Disciples churches have been mission partners with the church in Ecuador since 1997. Our congregation has had three work trips to Ecuador. In 2006, a three year effort reached its goal for a sheep project in the villages of Cotopaxi province.

From the beginning, our contact with FEDICE (Ecumenical Foundation for Holistic Development Training and Education) has been through Victor Vaca, who was employed through our Global Ministries Organization. His wife, Violet, had already retired from Global Ministries but continued to work in a volunteer capacity. Sadly, Violet died earlier this year but Victor remains committed to volunteer work with the indigenous people of Ecuador.

Blanca Puma was named Executive Director of FEDICE in 2007 and Victor stepped into the role of advisor/mentor. Victor and Blanca are speakers at the Regional Assembly and will tour churches in Oregon sharing about their ministry. We have the privilege of having them share at all three services this Sunday, April 20th.

Our church will have another work trip to Ecuador in the summer of 2009. Maybe you will be able to join us.

St. Augustine said, "God has promised foregiveness to your repentance, but He has not promosied tomorrow to your procrastination." The scripture reminds us that there are some things that we can't delay.

Which Criminal Are YOU?
Luke 23:32-43

When Jesus was crucified there was a criminal crucified on both sides of him. One criminal mocked Jesus. The other spoke with much more humility and received incredible grace.
I think it could be said that, even among us Christians, people represent one or the other of these two men. Since the scripture lets us know that we have all sinned, we all fall into the "criminal" category. The only question that remains is about which criminal most closely represents your life.

What’s All This About Lent

Have you ever heard of QWERTY? Those are the first 6 letters on the second row of the typewriter (predecessor to the computer for those born after 1980). The layout of the keys that we still use today was designed to slow down the typist so that the keys would not get stuck. The keys most frequently used were separated. Our lives get on such a fast past that sometimes we need something to slow us down. The Christian season of Lent is meant for just that purpose. One of my favorite quotations is, “We have to say “no� to the good so that we can say “Yes� to the best.� There are so many good options in life that unless we narrow our priorities, we will never have time for the most important things in life.

Ironically, Julie and I received our diploma from Financial Peace University this last Wednesday. I think the most important aspect of that title is “Peace�. How Soon Is ‘Soon’?

My Boss Is a Jewish Tekton

One of our fondest images of Jesus is his work as a carpenter. We envision him in his father’s shop, and later, perhaps, at his own place, working hard at his craft. But only one Bible verse mentions Jesus’ profession, and it uses a word (techton) that may imply something very different from our image—with even a possible hint of scandal! As we observe Labor Day, how might our view of Jesus’ labor and his mission influence our own work, and our calling as Christians?

Ecuador Mission Group

This Sunday our Ecuador Mission Group are sharing in all three services about their experiences! In addition to the work they did while they were there, they also were able to tour some of the projects that have been supported by this church. The Oregon Region of the Christian Church came together to sponsor the sheep project. This is a project to help the people become self-supporting. We have been hearing some brief reports of the great trip they had. We invite you to come hear and see (they will have pictures) about what God is doing through our people and the people of Ecuador.
