Sun, 6 July 2008 ![]() Sermon Only 11:00 am Pastor Bob Hanna Faith and Politics Matthew 22:15-22 It has been said that there are two topics that people in polite conversation should avoid: religion and politics. On Sundays, I am usually allowed to talk about faith. On this Independence Day weekend I would like to cross the other forbidden taboo of politics. In my opinion, how we engage in politics is a matter of stewardship. It is stewardship of the gift that we have of living in this country. How do we do this in a pluralistic society? What about the “separation of Church and State” issues? Hopefully, this sermon will also be a primer for you to consider attending one of our three adult Sunday School Classes (9:30 am - Discovery, Parables; 10:45 am - Cornerstone). Sun, 29 June 2008 ![]() Sermon Only 11:00 am Pastor Bob Hanna Wee Three Kings II Kings 11-12, II Chronicles 33, II Kings 22-23 This is our final Sunday of our June series on royal families. If you have been following along, I hope that you have picked up that the writers of Kings and Chronicles are not writing history as we think of it today. They were writing about faith. The three scriptures above tell about three people who became king at an average age of 9. For good reason, our nation has set a minimum age requirement of 35 for President. Joash began well, but finished poorly. Manasseh reigned longer than any other king (55 years), and for most of his life was considered one of Isarel’s most evil kings, yet at the end of his life turned to God. His grandson, Josiah (who began his rule at 8 years old) was considered one of the most righteous throughout his life. If someone was to write the history of your faith, what would they write? They were self-centered and self-serving and had a moral cowardice. When we are honest with ourselves, we see that we struggle with qualities like Ahab's and qualities like Jezebel's. Sun, 20 April 2008 ![]() Sermon Only 11:00 am Guest Speakers Victor Vaca & Blanca Puma Global Ministries Mark 9:34-38 Missionary Partners, Victor Vaca and Blanca Puma here this Sunday!! Oregon Disciples churches have been mission partners with the church in Ecuador since 1997. Our congregation has had three work trips to Ecuador. In 2006, a three year effort reached its goal for a sheep project in the villages of Cotopaxi province. From the beginning, our contact with FEDICE (Ecumenical Foundation for Holistic Development Training and Education) has been through Victor Vaca, who was employed through our Global Ministries Organization. His wife, Violet, had already retired from Global Ministries but continued to work in a volunteer capacity. Sadly, Violet died earlier this year but Victor remains committed to volunteer work with the indigenous people of Ecuador. Blanca Puma was named Executive Director of FEDICE in 2007 and Victor stepped into the role of advisor/mentor. Victor and Blanca are speakers at the Regional Assembly and will tour churches in Oregon sharing about their ministry. We have the privilege of having them share at all three services this Sunday, April 20th. Our church will have another work trip to Ecuador in the summer of 2009. Maybe you will be able to join us. Sun, 13 April 2008 ![]() Sermon Only 11:00 am Pastor Bob Hanna Stop Procrastinating...Now! Luke 9:57-62 Cartoon character, Little Leary, said "Starting tomorrow, I' gonna stop putting things off." One person put into vers: Procrastination - Mt greatest sin, It brings me endless sorrow. I'm going to stop doing it, Perhaps I'll start tomorrrow. With the tax deadline looming in the near future it seems like an appropriate time to address this subject. St. Augustine said, "God has promised foregiveness to your repentance, but He has not promosied tomorrow to your procrastination." The scripture reminds us that there are some things that we can't delay. Sun, 6 April 2008 ![]() Sermon Only 11:00 am Pastor Bob Hanna Which Criminal Are YOU? Luke 23:32-43 When Jesus was crucified there was a criminal crucified on both sides of him. One criminal mocked Jesus. The other spoke with much more humility and received incredible grace. I think it could be said that, even among us Christians, people represent one or the other of these two men. Since the scripture lets us know that we have all sinned, we all fall into the "criminal" category. The only question that remains is about which criminal most closely represents your life. Sun, 10 February 2008 ![]() Sermon Only 11:00 am Pastor Bob Hanna What's All This About Lent? Matthew 7:13 & 14 Have you ever heard of QWERTY? Those are the first 6 letters on the second row of the typewriter (predecessor to the computer for those born after 1980). The layout of the keys that we still use today was designed to slow down the typist so that the keys would not get stuck. The keys most frequently used were separated. Our lives get on such a fast past that sometimes we need something to slow us down. The Christian season of Lent is meant for just that purpose. One of my favorite quotations is, “We have to say “no? to the good so that we can say “Yes? to the best.? There are so many good options in life that unless we narrow our priorities, we will never have time for the most important things in life. Sermon Only 11:00 am Pastor Bob Hanna A Heavenly Attitude Philippians 4:4-9 Someone has written that in the desert, two very different birds thrive. The vultures see nothing but dead and stinking carcasses. The hummingbirds seek the lovely blossoms of cacti. The vultures live on the dead past. The hummingbirds live on the fragrant present. Each bird finds what it is looking for. So do people. The Apostle Paul urges us, “if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.? Sun, 25 November 2007 Sermon Only 11:00 am Pastor Bob Hanna Not Just for One Day A Year I Thessalonians 5:16-18 Unlike Christmas and Easter, Thanksgiving is not a recognized day of the church year. That's primarily because the fourth Thursday of November is an American holiday. Our neighbors to the north celebrated Thanksgiving in October. While it may not be on the liturgical calendar, I think Thanksgiving is one of our most important holidays. Robert Strand has written, "In Africa there is a fruit called the "taste berry," so called because it changes a person's taste buds in a way that everything eaten after it tastes sweet. Giving thanks is the 'taste berry' of Christianity. When our hearts are full of gratitude, nothing that comes our way will be unpalatable to us. Those whose lifestyle is marked by thanksgiving will enjoy a sweetness of life unparalleled by any other." If we take the words of James seriously, does that mean that we have not prayed with enough faith or does it mean that our definition of healing needs expansion? In addition to the work they did while they were there, they also were able to tour some of the projects that have been supported by this church. Sun, 15 July 2007 ![]() Sermon Only 11:00 am Pastor Bob Hanna Servanthood John 13:1-17 Mohammed Ali claimed to be "the greatest". What is great- ness? How do we know greatness when we see it? How do we become great? Martin Luther King said, "Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and your verb agree. You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love. Sun, 8 July 2007 ![]() Sermon Only 11:00 am Pastor Bob Hanna The Defiant Jesus Luke 2:41-52 & 6:1-11 We often picture Jesus as gentle, meek and mild. A complete picture of Jesus must also include his defiant side. Jesus was defiant against a life lived off point, a religion without humanity and a faith without compassion. As we move forward with out lives, let not leave Christ behind. Sun, 1 July 2007 ![]() Sermon Only 11:00 am Pastor Bob Hanna Declaration of Independence and a Constitution On the 4th of July we celebrate the signing of our country's Declaration of Independence. That is a very significant day in our country's history, but without the ratification of our constitution our independence would have soon turned into anarchy. The apostle Paul wrote, "You have been set free from sin and have become slave to righteousness." Even the freedom we have in Christ is kept "between the lines" by our pursuit of righteousness." Sun, 17 June 2007 Sermon Only 11:00 am Pastor Steve Fietz Measuring Over, Measuring Up Ephesians 4:11-16 Who in our life is the "measuring stick" of who we want to be? Are we inspired to do more, or do we make comparisons, and find ourselves wanting, or just jealous? This Father's Day, we take some time to think about these kinds of questions, especially in light of what it means to be a Christlike man. Sun, 10 June 2007 ![]() Sermon Only 11:00 am Pastor Bob Hanna Character over Giftedness Judges 13-16 The Portland Trailblazers will soon be given the opportunity to have the #1 draft pick (for non-sports fans...that means they get first choice of all the players wishing to become professional). If you had the responsibility of making that choice, would your priority be for character or for giftedness? The story of Samson gives us an excellent case study. Sun, 20 May 2007 Sermon Only 11:00 am Pastor Bob Hanna Dying to Be a Christian Romans 6:1-11 God did not send Jesus into the world to fix you. God doesn't want to do just a renovation project on us. Baptism is a sign that what God wants to have happen in our life is nothing less than a complete transformation. Sun, 13 May 2007 Sermon Only 11:00 am Pastor Bob Hanna Lessons from My Mother II Timothy 1:1-7 The apostle Paul was able to recognize in young Timothy a faith that he had first seen in his mother and grandmother. As I think about my mother, I too can recognize what she has passed on to me. It should make us all think about what characteristics we are passing on to those who look up to us. Sun, 29 April 2007 Sermon Only 11:00 am Pastor Bob Hanna A Third Way Matthew 5:38-41 Early Christians were called followers of "The Way". The world teaches that there are basically two ways to respond when others treat us poorly. The world teaches that we can either "do nothing" or react with equal or greater abuse. Jesus calls us to use the creative abilities that God has given us to find another way. Sun, 15 April 2007 Sermon Only 11:00 am Pastor Bob Hanna Put Your Sword Back in its Place Matthew 26:47-56, Judges 15:1-16 Our culture is saturated with what theologians call "The Myth of Redemptive Violence." This myth encourages us to believe that the best way to react to violence is with violence (usually ratcheted up a couple of levels). The Passion of Jesus shows another way. Comments[0] |
Sun, 8 April 2007 Sermon Only 11:00 am Pastor Bob Hanna Good News, Bad News Luke 24:1-5 If someone asks you, "I've got good news and I've got bad news. Which do you want to hear first?", what would be your answer? Holy Week is filled with Good News and Bad News. But Easter is filled with the best news of all. Comments[0] |
Sun, 1 April 2007 Sermon Only 11:00 am Pastor Bob Hanna The Importance of Little People Mark 15:1-39 What does it mean to worship? Why do we worship, and what is the true object of our praise? And the question for Palm Sunday: which life conditions lead us to worship, and which lead us to something less or Many people in the scripture stories pass with barely a mention. Yet, without these people the Gospel story would be no be the same. Centuries from now, our names will probably be forgotten, but will our lives have eternal significance? Comments[0] |
Sun, 25 March 2007 Sermon Only 11:30 am Pastor Steve Fietz God's Hand Is Not Too Short Isaiah 59:1-2 There may be many things that block us from a full relationship from God - but they do not come from God, who longs to fully connect with each and all, and who longs tp recpnnect when things are broken. Sun, 11 March 2007 Sermon Only 11:00 am Pastor Bob Hanna The Discipline of Simplicity Matthew 5:25-34 Henry Nouwen has written, "A strange sense of hurry has entered many people's lives. We wonder, 'Who or what is pushing me? It seems I am so busy and life is so full that I have no time left to live.'" Lent is a good time to think about doing some spring cleaning in our lives so that we have space for what is most important. Comments[0] |
